By Jim Dower: Light welterweight knockout artist Lucas Matthysse (27-1, 25 KO’s is getting back in action with a stay busy 10 round bout against 36-year-old DeMarcus Corley (37-15-1, 22 KO’s) at the Polideportivo Vincente Plimeni, Las Heras, Mendoza, Argentina. At one time in his career, the hard hitting southpaw Corley would have been trouble for anyone in boxing with his power and his southpaw stance. However, nowadays, Corley is nothing more than a gatekeeper and a name for fighters to test their skills on and add his name to their resume.

Under most circumstances, Corley still isn’t as easy win unless you go out head hunting early and blitz him like Freddy Hernandez did. Corley can take a good shot, though, as he showed in his 12 round decision loss to Marcos Maidana in August 2010. Matthysse, 28, should still win this fight without too many problems because he punches hard and is very good at boxing from the outside to avoid taking shots.

In his last fight, Matthysee lost a controversial 12 round decision to Zab Judah in November, despite knocking Judah down in the 10th and giving problems in the second portion of the fight. Judah would likely not want to fight Matthysse again, because he really got lucky to escape with the win in that fight. The defeat to Judah didn’t diminish Matthysse’s stock due to the good performance he put on in that fight. Matthysee just needs a good win over Corley and then another decent win, and he’s probably in position to challenge for one of the light welterweight titles. Matthysse is ranked at #4 by WBO, and would be the perfect opponent for Timothy Bradley and/or Devon Alexander in the future.
