Matthysse looks better than Khan

Image: Matthysse looks better than KhanBy Dan Ambrose: After watching Argentinian light welterweight knockout artist Lucas Matthysse (28-1, 26 KO’s) easily dispatch the hard-hitting DeMarcus Corley (37-16-1, 22 KO’s) in an 8th round TKO in Argentina, I have no doubts in my mind that Matthysse is more than good enough to beat WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan. Matthysse looks like a better version of Marcos Maidana, with better defense and a better inside game than Maidana.

While Maidana struggled to defeat Corley by a 12 round decision last year, Matthysse easily beat Corley, knocking him down eight times with a crushing body attack. Matthysse’ left hooks to the body were devastating and way more than Corley could handle. Corley fought okay at times in the first three rounds of the fight, but when Matthysse started going to the body with left hands in the 4th, Corley was in immediate trouble.

Corley simply couldn’t handle Matthysse’s body shots and he began to feel the effects in the 5th, when Matthysse put Corley down twice. Matthysse added two more knockdowns in the 6th, and three more in the 7th with body shots and right hands to the head. Matthysse showed that he was far too powerful for Corley on the inside and looked sensational in getting the win. I don’t expect Khan to face Matthysse, but if and when does, I see Khan getting knocked out. Matthysse is for real and looks incredible when he’s throwing to the body. This is the same kind of body punching that Matthysse did in his fight with Zab Judah last year, except that Matthysse lost by a home town decision to Judah.

There’s no shame in Matthysse being better than Khan, because I think Matthysse also looks better than Maidana. This guy is much more versatile than Maidana and Khan, and is able to fight on the outside or the inside with his speed and power.
