Matthew Hatton – Saul Alvarez for March 5th

By Jim Dower: An interesting fight that’s being talked about is the proposed battle between unbeaten 20-year-old Saul Avarez (35-0-1, 26 KO’s) and EBU welterweight champion Matthew Hatton (41-4-2, 16 KO’s) for March 5th. I would be really surprised if Hatton Promotions goes ahead and puts Matthew in this fight, because he doesn’t appear to have the artillery needed to win this fight.

Hatton, 29, has the boxing skills to beat Alvarez, but the big problem is that Hatton will be over-matched in this fight because Alvarez hits so hard and you have to have either a lot of power or great defensive skills to beat him. Hatton has neither going for him. He’s a good serviceable fighter who’s at home fighting European level fighters but he doesn’t have the tools to beat a slugger like Alvarez. Hatton can punch a little to the body, but he doesn’t punch nearly as hard as the 20-year-old Alvarez.

If Hatton’s chin could hold up for him, then maybe he can win this fight if he can go to the body and look to hurt Alvarez as he did Roberto Belge in his last fight in November in a 3rd round KO. However, Alvarez will be testing Hatton’s chin from the first moments in the fight and without head movement and an ability to get out of the way of Alvarez’s big shots, Matthew is going to go down sooner or late and be counted out. This is going to be like a fox hunt for Alvarez, because he’s a pure slugger and has one punch knockout power.
