Martinez vs. Dzinziruk: Sergio will lose if he can’t get by Sergiy’s jab

By Dan Ambrose: Earlier today, WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez 46-2-2, 26 KO’s) was appointed the position of WBC Emeritus champion by the World Boxing Council in order to make room for a fight between unbeaten WBC interim middleweight champion Sebastian Zbik and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

However, the fight between Martinez and WBO junior middleweight champion Sergiy Dzinziruk (37-0, 23 KO’s) will still go ahead as scheduled for March 12th at the Foxwoods Resort Casino, in Mashantucket, Connecticut. The only thing that’s changed is that Chavez and Zbik will be fighting for a worthless paper title, while the real champion Martinez takes on Dzinziruk in a much more relevant bout.

Martinez has big problems on his hands against Dzinziruk, because this fighter is a much more polished one with more discipline compared to Martinez’s last two opponents Kelly Pavlik and Paul Williams. Dzinziruk isn’t just going to wade in and look to throw a lot of punches hoping he can knock Martinez out the way that Pavlik and Williams did in their fight with Martinez. Dzinziruk has an excellent jab and that’s the key for him to dominate Martinez and keep him trapped on the outside.

Martinez has to figure out how to get by this jab, because Dzinziruk throws it hard enough to stop his opponents in their tracks. Since Martinez often likes to charge forward and throw big power shots, he’s going to be vulnerable when he’s coming in. Martinez is tough to hit because of his constant movement, changing of angles and his in and out attacks. But Dzinziruk isn’t one to go after his opponents and get out of position.

All Dzinziruk will need to do is keep turning and be ready for Martinez when he does make his attacks. Martinez needs to duck Dzinziruk’s jabs and come in with straight lefts. It’s going to be hard to do because Dzinziruk snaps his jab back fast and is able to fire another one. He doesn’t just leave it hanging for his opponents to pick off.
