Image: Lucas Matthysse: the DestroyerBy Francisco Hernandez: Last night January 21, 2011 at Vicente Polimeni stadium, Argentina, fight fans witnessed the brutal massacre of Demarcus Corley. Some boxing fans may have been tempted to call the police to stop the beating. Demarcus Corley had traveled to Argentina before to fight Marcos Maidana and lose a close fight. Corley expected if not to win at least to duplicate his last performance in Argentina. After all Zab Judah was able to survive against Lucas Matthysse, and even get the controversial win.

What Corley didn’t know is that Lucas Matthysse learned some lessons from his fight with Zab Judah. Against Zab Judah, Matthysse was one dimensional in his punching; he either punched to the body or the head, but didn’t combine both types of punching well. Also Matthysse didn’t exert enough pressure early in the fight against Judah, Matthysse started too slow. Now Matthysse is combining body and head punching, alternating his punches well, and he is starting the fight fast and furious. Matthysse didn’t just stop Corley; he dismembered him, reducing Corley to a helpless victim.

Matthysse demonstrated that he is an intelligent fighter; he learns from his mistakes and makes the necessary improvements. Although it is difficult to make the comparison, in some brief instances of the fight, Matthysse reminded me of legend Julio Cesar Chavez.

Matthysse is dangerous for anyone in the junior welters, he definitely can knockout Judah in a rematch. Amir Khan will never face him, he hits too hard. I can see a great match in a fight between Matthysse and Devon Alexander.
