Haye says “I’m done with the Klitschkos”

Image: Haye says "I'm done with the Klitschkos"By William Mackay: WBA heavyweight champion David Haye (25-1, 23 KO’s) in an article at examiner.com, said “If the fight doesn’t happen now, it never will. I’m done with the Klitschkos.” This is in response to Wladimir deciding to fight on April 30th against Dereck Chisora (14-0, 9 KO’s). Haye and his promoters don’t like the idea of Wladimir fighting on this date, feeling it’s too close to the July 2nd date that they agreed on to fight Wladimir.

Haye doesn’t believe that Wladimir will be able to get back in the ring and fight him only nine weeks after the Chisora bout. Haye thinks Wladimir is going to weasel out of a fight with him in July and come up with some other excuse at that time. Of course, if Haye is really worried about all of this, he could always choose to fight Wladimir’s older brother WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko. That would be one option unless Haye is perhaps afraid to get in the ring with Vitali and only likes his chances against Wladimir. In that case, Haye needs to either wait or forget about it and look to finish the remainder of his career against guys like Ruslan Chagaev and similar guys.

Haye says “Klitschko claims he’ll fight both me and Chisora, but it’s nonsense. Are we expected to believe that a fighter who competed only once in the whole of 2009 and twice in 2010 is now going to box twice in a matter of nine weeks? A bout with me is the most lucrative, meaningful and dangerous fight Wladimir’s ever had, not some throwaway tune-up. Wladimir won’t fight anybody nine weeks after Chisora, let alone me. I now need to look for a fight of my own beyond April, as Amir Khan has that month tied up with his bout. Presumably Wladimir is expecting me to fight in either May or June and then face him in early July. It’s ridiculous.”

Haye is in a pickle. He can’t fight on pay-per-view in April because Sky only shows one PPV event per month, and if he waits until May or June, it will take him too close to the July date. But all Haye needs to do is extend his retirement date beyond October, and he’s there. He can still fight both Klitschko brothers and finish his career in early 2012. That’s what he should do and probably what he will do. No way will Haye walk away from the kind of cash he’ll get for the Klitschko fights, although I only see Haye fighting one of them and then getting knocked cold.
