Froch vs. Johnson on 5/21 – Still no venue chosen

By Scott Gilfoid: We finally have a date for the Super Six semifinal bout between World Boxing Council (WBC) super middleweight champion Carl Froch (27-1, 20 KO’s) and Glen Johnson (51-14-2, 35 KO’s), as their fight will be taking place on May 21st. However, we still don’t know where the fight will be taking place.

Froch, 33, wants it to take place in his native England, and Johnson hasn’t really said what his preferences are. Hopefully, the fight doesn’t place in the UK because I already saw Froch win a controversial 12 round split decision over Andre Dirrell in October 2009 and I don’t care to see Froch fight in Nottingham again during the Super Six tournament.

Once the tourney is through, Froch can fight in Nottingham for the remainder of his career for all I care, but I don’t want to see him there during the tourney. If it does take place there, Johnson would do well to try his best to knock Froch cold to make sure he doesn’t lose by a controversial decision. I had Dirrell beating Froch by a landslide, yet the judges scored it for Froch.

Johnson looked great in defeating Allan Green by an 8th round TKO on November 6th in Johnson’s first fight in the tourney last year. We didn’t know what we would be getting with Johnson because at 42, he’s up there in age. Johnson had looked weak and weight drained in a loss before the tourney against Tavoris Cloyd in August last year. However, Johnson was able to come down from light heavyweight to the super middleweight division without any hint of being weakened. On the contrary, Johnson looked very powerful against Green.

I expect Johnson too be too strong for the limited slow moving Froch. Johnson will be coming forward and pounding Froch with big power shots. Froch will be his own worst enemy by coming straight at Johnson and leaning forward with his big lantern jaw thrust out in front of him just begging to be slugged.
