Image: Froch-Johnson: Glen considering fighting Carl in England if the money is rightBy Scott Gilfoid: 42-year-old Glen Johnson (51-14-2, 35 KO’s) faces WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch (27-1, 20 KO’s) in the semifinals of the Super Six tournament on May 21st at a still to be decided venue. To his credit, Johnson is saying he would be agreeable to fighting Froch in England if the money is fight, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN. Normally, I would strongly urge Johnson to avoid fighting Froch in his home city of Nottingham, England, after seeing Froch win what appeared to be a hometown decision over the blistering fast Andre Dirrell in the Froch’s first fight in the Super Six tournament in October 2009.

Froch hit air all night long and the only time he could really land was when he was holding and hitting Dirrell and blasting him with beautiful rabbit shots at close range. The referee might as well have been on vacation during that fight because he was just letting Froch get a way with bloody murder in there. At one point Froch even body slammed poor Dirrell, and yet the referee never lifted a finger to take points or disqualify Froch.

Now I would normally advise Johnson to forget about fighting Froch in jolly old England, but I think Johnson can win there regardless of how the judges score the fight or even with the referee just tuned out and doing nothing. Johnson’s main chance of beating Froch is to knock him out. I don’t think Johnson has the boxing skills to win a decision over Froch at this late stage in his career. As such, I think Johnson is going to have to knock Froch out to get the win and I think he can do that in England just as well as any other venue in the world.

As long as the referee doesn’t pull a Joe Cortez and step in and pull Johnson off of Froch while he’s hammering him with shots, Johnson should be okay even in England. I say go ahead and fight there, as long as they give Johnson good cash for the fight. If not, then forget it. I don’t want to see a million screaming Brits making so much noise that Johnson can’t even think straight. He needs peace and quiet if he’s not going to be getting the big money to put up with all that.
