Foreman-Wolak: Yuri on the comeback trail

By Jim Dower: One of the best junior middleweights in the division will be back in action on March 12th when former WBC junior middleweight champion Yuri Foreman (28-1, 8 KO’s) gets back in the ring to face Pawel Wolak (28-1, 18 KO’s) in a 10 round bout at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Foreman, 30, looked good at times in his last fight with Miguel Cotto last June, but when Foreman’s right knee gave out in the 7th, it spelled doom for him.

With only one leg to carry him around the ring, Foreman was at the mercy of Cotto’s powerful hooks until being stopped in the 9th. Had the injury not occurred, it’s hard to say who would have won because Foreman was really getting to Cotto in round five through seven. Cotto looked great in the first four rounds, but Foreman cranked it up after the 4th and was punishing Cotto until the injury occurred.

After the defeat, Foreman had his knee repaired by a local surgeon in the New York area, and his right knee is now as good as new. He’s going to be trouble, big trouble for Wolak on 3/12. This should be a one-sided fight because even when fighting on only one knee, Foreman was an exceptional fighter. But with his right knee now at 100%, he’s going to be dominating like never before. Wolak is a good fighter, and is good enough to beat most fighters in the junior middleweight division, but he’s not in the same league as Foreman. This is going to be painfully obvious once the punches start flying in the 1st round.
