Image: David Price wants to replace David Haye as the best heavyweight in the UKBy Sean McDaniel: Unbeaten heavyweight prospect and former Olympian David Price (8-0, 6 KO’s) feels like he’s being forgotten and left behind as other fighters from the UK are getting attention that the 27-year-old Price badly wants. Price feels that he can replace WBA heavyweight champion David Haye as the top guy in the UK after he retires at the end of the year.

However, Price, because he still hasn’t fought anyone with a pulse, is largely being ignored by the boxing public. Price isn’t helped that he didn’t fight enough in 2010, fighting only four times, which isn’t enough for a fighter that’s just starting out as a pro. Price needs to be fighting a lot more than that if he wants to move quickly with his career. At 27, he’s kind of old for a fighter that’s just starting his career and for that reason he needs to step up the pace of how often he fights.

Price has a reputation in some corners as having a bad chin because he was stopped in the 2008 Olympics by Italian heavyweight Roberto Cammerelle in the semi finals. You can’t blame Price for losing that fight because Cammerelle was a hard puncher and very experienced due to all of his amateur experience before this Olympics.

In article at the Mirror.co.uk, Price says he wants to fight for the British heavyweight title by mid year in 2011. This means that Price will be facing Dereck Chisora, one of the best fighters in the UK and probably the 2nd best heavyweight behind Haye. Price would be asking a lot of himself to beat a guy like Chisora, especially after the experience Chisora will gain from his April 30th fight against IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko.

Price says “My target is to be fighting for the British title by the middle of the year and I know I’m good enough. David Haye says he’ll quit at the end of the year and I believe I can replace him. I have the ability if someone would just give me the chance to show what I can do. I’ve sparred with world title challengers like Alberto Sosnowski, and more than held my own. I hear the likes of [Tyson] Fury and Chisora going on and, as far as talent is concerned, they are not better than me.”

Price has good power and excellent size at 6’8″ 247 lbs, but he needs to learn how to use his reach because he tends to stand in close to his opponents and give up his height and reach. He can get away with banging in close early in his career against 2nd and 3rd tier opposition but when he steps it up against quality heavyweights, he’s going to probably wish he learned how to use his reach. Price needs someone like Emanuel Steward to teach him how to fight tall. Fury is training with Steward and it would be interesting if Price could do it as well.
