Can Haye beat Wladimir without hammering him with rabbit shots?

By Scott Gilfoid: I’ve studied WBA heavyweight champion David Haye’s last four fights at heavyweight against Monte Barrett, Nikolay Valuev, John Ruiz and Audley Harrison and I’ve come to the conclusion that Haye has one of the best rabbit punches I’ve ever seen before. I mean the guy can throw a mean rabbit shot like no one else.

When Haye lays into one of his opponents with a rabbit punch, it’s like watching a picture perfect textbook version of how to throw one of these shots. I’ve also studied IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko’s last four opponents and I’ve come to the conclusion that this guy has way too much size, too much talent and too much power for the little 6’2” 217 pound Haye in a normal fight.

However, I’m giving Haye an excellent chance of beating Wladimir for one reason and one only – his rabbit punching. It’s that one gray area where I see Haye way over Wladimir’s head in expertise. It’s not that Haye tries to throw rabbits out of design.

They just often end up happening when Haye is teeing off when his opponent is trying to clinch. Since Wladimir just loves to clinch all the time, Haye has got what you would call the dream opponent for him to land some choice accidental rabbit shots against.

It’s like putting a baseball on a tee for a homerun hitter to tee off on. Wladimir, if he does wind up fighting Haye, will be presenting situations a plenty for Haye to load up and go rabbit crazy when Wladimir tries on of his many clinches.

Wladimir typically initiates clinches between six to twelve times per round. That’s a lot of opportunities that Wladimir will be giving Haye in their fight. The thing is with Haye’s kind of power and his perfect form when landing these accidental rabbit shots, I can see Wladimir getting knocked out during the first clinch.

It doesn’t take a lot to knock someone out when you bop them on the back of the head. This is why if I’m Wladimir, I’ll have the referee ready to pull the plug on Haye if he connects with one of his rabbit shots. You can’t let him get away with these punches because Wladimir won’t stand a chance.

Without rabbit shots, I don’t give Haye any chance to beat Wladimir. I don’t see him getting close enough to land and his wild haymakers will be hitting only air because of the long distance they’ll have to travel to get to Wladimir.
