Wladimir must do the right thing and face Chisora, or relinquish his titles

Image: Wladimir must do the right thing and face Chisora, or relinquish his titlesBy Shaun Campbell: Now, first of all I would like to say that I believe the fight that should have been made was Wladimir Klitschko verses David Haye. Other than that I do not see an interesting, even, competitive fight in the heavyweight division. A man that will certainly disagree with that is another British fighter called Derek Chisora. Chisora (who is the current British and Commonwealth champion) was obviously due to face Klitschko for the IBO, IBF, and WBO titles on December 11th, but an injury forced the world champion to pull out.

Some are saying it’s a problem with his back, others are saying it’s a problem with his abdomen. Obviously there have been those who perhaps are not very knowledgeable about boxing saying that Klitschko is “scared”. Personally, I do not believe that. I don’t believe a fighter is ever scared of another fighter. This is boxing, fighters fight, no one would be in boxing if they were afraid to fight each other.

Now there is much talk about David Haye swooping in to fight Klitschko at Wembley Stadium in London next. There is no doubt that this fight would sell more tickets, more PPV numbers, more money, and as said before, this is the fight that must happen. It seems things are finally coming together. But unfortunately, it shouldn’t be Klitschko’s next fight. Many may disagree and as much as I’d love to see Haye fight Wladimir, a contract was signed to say that Derek Chisora would be fighting for the heavyweight championship of the world in his next fight. That contract should be honoured. With the problems in boxing nowadays involving promoters and politics, this would do nothing to help the reputation of the sport if the young ambitious challenger got robbed of his shot at the big time.

It would be sensational to see Chisora pull it off, but I couldn’t see it happening. That’s not to say he shouldn’t have a chance. I couldn’t see Manny Pacquiao beating Oscar De La Hoya, I didn’t back Carl Froch to beat Arthur Abraham, I thought Haye would be too small to defeat Valuev, and never in my wildest dreams did I believe Ricky Hatton would stop the legendary Kostya Tszyu. To my delight I was proved wrong on all those times. Chisora beating Klitschko would be the biggest upset of them all. Possibly the biggest upset in modern heavyweight history. He deserves his chance.

No matter what Chisora, in my opinion, should be fighting for a world title in his next fight. Whether that means Wladimir Klitschko is involved or not is another story. If the current world champion gives in to his urges at a bigger pay day and decides to negotiate with the WBA champion Haye, then I believe he should be stripped of his titles. He will be fighting for another world championship anyway, and he will have done the equivalent of not facing the agreed opponent.

I don’t believe for one minute that the sanctioning bodies would do such a thing, but it does worry me that Chisora may be pushed aside so a unification bout can take place. For me, Haye vs. Klitschko must happen, but Chisora got there first and the world must wait for the eagerly anticipated heavyweight showdown for ultimate supremacy.
