Wladimir Klitschko could be facing Adamek next, not David Haye

By Eric Thomas: In the latest boxing news, IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (55-3, 49 KO’s) is reportedly mentioning #1 ranked World Boxing Organization heavyweight challenger Tomasz Adamek (43-1, 28 KO’s) as his possible next opponent rather than WBA heavyweight champion David Haye (25-1, 23 KO’s). Klitschko, 34, is currently healing up from an abdominal muscle tear, which will require at least six weeks for him to recover.

The injury caused Wladimir to pull out of his previously scheduled fight with unbeaten British heavyweight Dereck Chisora. Although Wladimir still hasn’t said whether he plans on going ahead with the Chisora fight, it’s not looking favorable for a fight against the British heavyweight. However, it’s perhaps best that Wladimir not waste time with that fight, as few boxing fans were interested in seeing him beat up on the experienced, short and not particularly powerful Chisora.

Adamek would be a much better option for Wladimir. Ideally, a fight with Haye would be Wladimir’s first choice. But there’s talk that Haye is going to slip in one more fight against his #1 WBA ranked contender Ruslan Chagaev before he’s really serious about fighting Wladimir or his brother WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko. If Haye is serious about wanting to fight Wladimir, he’ll have to agree on putting all of his UK pay-per-view money into the pot so that the purse can be split 50-50. Haye has been hesitant to do that in the past. That’s going to be the difficult part in making a fight with either of the Klitschkos.

Wladimir could really mess up Haye’s plans if he decides to let his older brother Vitali fight Haye first, because Haye and his trainer/manager Adam Booth seem to be really dialed into wanting to fight Wladimir first. This suggests that they may not like their chances of Haye being able to beat the 6’7″ Vitali and want to face Wladimir first. By Wladimir letting Vitali fight Haye first, it will put Haye in the position of either agreeing or backing down and continuing to milk his title against lesser heavyweights until he retires next year in October.

If Wladimir takes on Adamek, it’s going to really put a lot of pressure on Haye into making the fights with one of the Klitschkos soon if he wants to fight both of them before retiring. Haye might have to take on Vitali if he wants to face one of the Klitschkos.
