Image: Warren says talk of Khan facing Mayweather is nonsenseBy Sean McDaniel: British promoter Frank Warren has reportedly offered WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan a huge money offer for him to fight his star welterweight Kell Brook next for Khan’s April fight in the UK. Brook recently destroyed Philip Kotey, and looked very good in doing so.

Warren would like to put Brook with Khan now if Khan is willing to accept the offer.

In a press release sent out today, Warren said “There is talk of him [Khan] facing Floyd Mayweather, which is nonsense and he should take up the big offer I’ve made to him to take on Kell.”

It’s not clear how much money Warren is talking about but it would be interesting to see if Khan ignores the offer if it’s a huge one. Brook is a dangerous fighter because of his power and unorthodox fighting style. He is shorter than Khan, so Amir couldn’t say that he doesn’t want to fight Brook because he’s too big.

Brook would be a better opponent than Lamont Peterson, the fighter that is currently being mentioned for Khan’s next bout in April. Peterson walked knocked down twice in his last fight against Victor Ortiz and pretty well beaten up in the fight. Although it was ruled a draw, a lot of boxing fans, and this writer included, felt that Ortiz did more than enough to beat Peterson.

Of course, Peterson can’t really punch, unlike Brook. That might be a factor in why Brook may not get the fight with Khan. He’s simply a dangerous fighter because of his power and speed. Khan has been talking up a fight with Mayweather 24/7 and trying to singlehandedly drum up support for a fight in the future. Thus far, it’s failed to gather any momentum and many fans think Khan is dreaming.

Brook said “I know I can beat him…Frank’s made him an offer and I hope he accepts it so we can find out who is the best.”

A fight between Khan and Brook is the best one that Khan could put together if he’s committed to fighting in the UK next. Brook is a lot more recognizable compared to Peterson, and he didn’t just get the stuffing beaten out of him the way that Peterson did in his controversial draw with Ortiz. Brook would be the much better choice if Khan wants to impress the British public.
