Image: Schaefer to push for Hopkins-Pascal rematchBy Dan Ambrose: Richard Schaefer, the CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, is going to push for a rematch between his fighter 45-year-old Bernard Hopkins (51-5-2, 32 KO’s) and World Boxing Council (WBC) light heavyweight champion Jean Pascal (26-1-1, 16 KO’s) after Hopkins failed in beating Pascal and had to settle for a majority draw in their fight last Saturday night at the Pepsi Colisseum, in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada.

Hopkins was knocked down twice in the first three rounds, and then spent the rest of the bout trying to make up for those knockdowns. As it turned out, it was impossible for Hopkins to make up all the points he had lost. The judges scored it 114-112 Hopkins, 113-113, 114-114.

In an article at secondsout.com, Schaefer said after the fight, “It’s really a shame. It’s a shame for Canada. It’s a shame for boxing to have a decision like that. We had Canadian people, Canadian fans come up to us and tell us he [Hopkins] won. That is what is wrong with boxing. He sure didn’t lose. I think if you think that, you don’t know what boxing means. Look at the scorecards. It happens all the time up here, that is what is wrong with boxing. It’s a disgrace. We are going to file a protest. The WBC will order an immediate rematch and we will see what other legal remedies we have because this is wrong. This is wrong.”

The decision really wasn’t that bad. It may have looked bad because Hopkins won a lot of the rounds, but you have to remember that Pascal scored a lot of his points in the two rounds in which Hopkins was knocked down. If Schaefer wanted his man to win, he should have been more concerned with keeping him on his feet instead of getting knocked down left and right. I don’t think Hopkins deserved to win and I hate to think of there being a rematch. The fight was boring, nothing but one long mugging on the inside round after round. I’d rather have Pascal move onto a rematch against Chad Dawson.

That fight at least we’d see some nice boxing and some blistering exchanges on the outside instead of a bunch of boring wrestling. I hate watching wrestling fights and the Hopkins-Pascal fight had too much wrestling for my tastes. I think Hopkins vs. WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward would be a good fight for Hopkins. The two fighters could slam against other head first like rams all night long and we could see who the better fighter of the two would be.
