Image: Prediction: Khan will never be the same again after the savage beating he took from MaidanaBy Dan Ambrose: WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (24-1, 17 KO’s) took a Cotto-esque type beating last Saturday night against the powerful Marcos Maidana (29-2, 27 KO’s) en route to barely winning by a 12 round decision. Khan was staggered in the 10th and looked hurt in the remaining rounds of the fight as he took one big shot after another from Maidana. However, I have a strong feeling that Khan will never be the same fighter after this bout because he took too many hard shots and these are the type of punches that greatly shorten a career.

I can see Khan getting badly hurt much quicker in his next fight in April unless his Golden Boy Promotions handlers go back to matching Khan against light punchers again. Up until the Maidana fight, Khan had been put in with nothing but weak punchers since being knocked out by Breidis Prescott in 2008. This is what they have to do with Khan if they want to keep him from getting knocked out before they cash out with a fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. possibly next year. Khan has a throw away fight coming up next on April 16th in the UK.

Khan will obviously have to be matched against a recognizable name if he’s to get big pay-per-view numbers on Sky, so that means they’ll have to choose someone with a pulse who’s known by UK fans like Breidis Prescott. They can’t go back to matching Khan against UK fighters, though, because there’s no one really decent enough for Khan to fight unless they want to put him in with Kell Brook or John Murray.

Those are interesting fights for UK fans, but it will turn off fans from other parts of the world because they don’t have a clue who Brook or Murray are. If they match Khan against light welterweight contender Victor Ortiz, I see Khan getting knocked out. I think he’ll be too deteriorated to beat Ortiz and will end up getting blasted out. As such, there won’t be a Khan-Mayweather bout that his promoters and trainer Freddie Roach are dreaming of, but at least Khan will have had his one big bout against Maidana to be proud of.
