Image: Pascal says Hopkins was always coming in with his headBy Dan Ambrose: WBC light heavyweight champion Jean Pascal turned back 45-year-old challenger Bernard Hopkins on Saturday night, knocking him down twice and limiting him to a 12 round majority draw in a fight where the action was down right primitive and ugly. Hopkins often led with his head looking a lot like a human billy goat the way he was diving in on Pascal in a ramming motion.

Pascal was able to capitalize on Hopkins head down approach to fighting by knocking him down once in the 1st and another time in the 3rd. However, Hopkins gave Pascal problems in the middle of the fight when he was able to mug Pascal on the inside with his wrestling and rough inside brawling. I thought Hopkins should have been penalized multiple times for leading with his head. It was pretty bad and made it hard for Pascal to fight at the level he’s accustomed to.

After the bout, Pascal said “I do believe I won the fight. That wasn’t my beat fight but Bernard likes to fight ugly, dirty. It’s not that he’s that good. he’s a tough guy to box. He’s always coming with his head.” Here here. I totally agree with Pascal. I thought for a second that I saw some horns starting to grow out of the sides of Hopkins’ in the middle rounds, because he was doing a superb job of coming forth head first like a little ram. It was sad that the referee let Hopkins get away with this without disqualifying or at the minimum taking points off.
