Mosley-Pacquiao bout could be announced soon

By Chris Williams: It appears that Manny Pacquiao and his promoter Bob Arum will select fading 39-year-old Shane Mosley to fight next in what will likely be the equivalent of a stay busy fight for Pacquiao while he waits and hopes for a bout against Floyd Mayweather Jr. next year.

The Mosley fight will be taking place on May 7th, a fight pretty much only a Pacquiao can could love. It’s going to be one-sided from start to finish. Mosley appears to be at least seven years out of his prime and not nearly the same threat he once was.

In his prime, I would have given Mosley an excellent chance of beating Pacquiao, but right now, he’s nothing but fodder for him to pad his record with. It’s just not an appealing fight, especially when you figure it will probably go for between $55 to $60 on pay-per-view.

You get to see the Pacquiao-Mosley mismatch, as well as what will likely be an undercard of prospects in more mismatches. At best, we might see Mike Jones vs. Jesus Soto Karass, two flawed welterweight contenders going at it. That’s enough for me to want to pay big money to see this card, and that’s why I’m hoping Arum sells this card at a steep discount of 95% off.

On Mosley’s twitter, he said this to Lennox Lewis: “Just excited about the fight with Pac [Manny Pacquiao]. I know you’re going to be there. The ink hasn’t dried yet but it’s pretty much a go.”

It’s too bad that there’s not enough stars in the sports so that a fighter in his prime couldn’t have been found to face Pacquiao rather than Mosley. But of course there were a couple of prime opponents that Pacquiao could have faced – Andre Berto and Juan Manuel Marquez – but they apparently didn’t make the cut, and you have to wonder why.
