Khan: The Mayweather fight is the one people want to see

Image: Khan: The Mayweather fight is the one people want to seeBy William Mackay: For some reason WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (24-1, 17 KO’s) is convinced that boxing fans want to see him fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. I honestly don’t see the interest that Khan is talking about from fans, because the fighter that I mostly see lumped with Khan is Marcos Maidana. Boxing fans want to see a rematch between the two of them, but for some reason Khan isn’t taking notice. What seems unusual about this is that the only one on the internet that seems to be talking about a Mayweather-Khan fight is Khan himself. The fight that fans want to see is Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao, not Khan vs. Mayweather. The only opponent that boxing fans seem to want to see Khan against is Maidana. That will change once the smoke clears for the Bradley-Alexander bout, but fans will still want to see Khan back in there with Maidana. Don’t hold your breath waiting for that rematch to happen, because I don’t see it happening in this lifetime.

Khan recently barely survived a fight against Marcos Maidana, winning by a narrow margin after being badly hurt in the 10th round. Khan finished the fight getting pummeled for the last three rounds and having to hold and run much of the time to keep from getting knocked out. It wasn’t the type of performance that would make you think that Khan deserves a fight against Mayweather.

Indeed, the performance left a lot of unanswered questions about Khan’s ability to handle getting hit. It seems that Khan loses senses completely when he gets hurt and instead of fighting smart, he tries to trade with his opponents. This is what happened in his 1st round knockout loss to Breidis Prescott, and this is what Khan was doing in the 10th round against Maidana.

Speaking to sport.co.uk, Khan said “I think I proved a lot in my last fight against Maidana…I think I’ll be fighting in the UK. No names mentioned. The Mayweather fight is the fight people want to see. I think I have the style to beat him. That fight will happen in the next 12 to 15 months.”

God, I hope that fight doesn’t happen anytime soon because I don’t want to see Khan beaten up and left on the canvas knocked out. That’s a mismatch waiting to happen. Khan really needs to focus on beating whoever gets picked out for him next rather than skip ahead. He still has to beat whoever Golden Boy Promotions picks out for him in his next fight in April. I’m guessing it won’t be anyone with any kind of power, because I think they’re going to go back to matching Khan against weak punchers again to keep him from getting exposed. Khan still has to beat the winner of the Devon Alexander-Timothy Bradley fight. That’s a real tough challenge for Khan, and I can’t see him beating the winner of that fight.
