Image: Hopkins belly aching about the decision, feels he should have wonBy Dan Ambrose: Bernard Hopkins was having a hard time Acknowledging the fact that he didn’t beat WBC light heavyweight champion Jean Pascal on Saturday night in Quebec, Canada. The fight ended rightfully so in a 12 round majority draw.

Hopkins, 45, only can blame himself for not winning by getting knocked down twice in the early rounds. Hopkins should know that any time you get knocked down twice in a fight, you pretty much have to win all the remaining rounds if you want to win a decision. Sorry but Hopkins didn’t do that on Saturday.

After the fight, Hopkins looked confused as to why he didn’t win, saying “Come on, Man, I had the guy beat up. He was holding. Come on, man. That’s not right, man. I won every round. They got me winning damn near every round.”

I hate to break this to Hopkins but he didn’t win every round. He definitely screwed up and lost some rounds besides the ones he got knocked out in, and that’s all it took for the fight to end up in a draw. Next time if he plans on beating a champion like Pascal, Hopkins needs to do a better job of staying on his feet. He’s the one that got knocked down twice, not Pascal.

Hopkins needs to sit down and look at the fight again and see where he messed up because Pascal fought Hopkins well enough to keep it a draw and thus retain his title. Perhaps Hopkins can now go after some other champion unless he’s going to disappear for another year like he did after his win over Kelly Pavlik. Hopkins is just going to have to take the pain of not getting the results he wants, learn from it and move on. He had his chance and he blew it by getting knocked down again. Pascal will now move on the bigger and better things.
