Froch will lose to Glen Johnson

Image: Froch will lose to Glen JohnsonBy Scott Gilfoid: WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch (27-1, 20 KO’s) was able to win his last Super Six tournament bout against Arthur Abraham to recapture his World Boxing Council super middleweight title in the stage 3 part of the Super Six tournament in Helsinki, Finland. Froch, 33, right now has become cocky with his win over Abraham and sees himself having no problems in the semifinals against 41-year-old Glen Johnson (51-14-2, 35 KO’s), and that’s going to be Froch’s undoing. It’s sad when a fighter gets cocky after one win.

You see Froch doesn’t have the kind of talent for him to be overlooking anyone, least of all a tough old cookie like Johnson. Froch had been looking terrible in his fights with Jermain Taylor, Andre Dirrell and Mikkel Kessler before being matched up against Abraham. It the perfect opponent for Froch to get his game back together again, because Abraham was coming off a one-sided loss to talented American Dirrell and didn’t have the work rate or confidence to really compete against Froch.

Abraham looked like a beaten man even before he walked into the ring with Froch. Heck, all Froch had to do is stand there and throw dozen shots every round and he basically had the fight won with that alone. But things are going to go back to normal for Froch when he gets in there with the tough old Johnson. In other words, I see Froch slipping back into his mediocrity and looking as horrible as he had been before the Abraham fight. With his hands hanging down by his waist, Froch’s head is going to be like a big neon sign for Johnson’s huge shots.

Froch had the size advantage against the 5’10” Abraham in his last fight. However, Johnson, 5’11”, will the bigger fighter when he steps in the ring against the skinny Froch. Johnson is used to fighting at light heavyweight his entire career and after he rehydrates after the weigh-in, I expect him to be weighing close to 190. That’s going to give Johnson a big size advantage over Froch.

Things are going to go badly for Froch I hate to say. Johnson’s eyes are going to be as big as saucers when he sees Froch fighting with his hands down in the opening round. Johnson won’t waste any time waiting for an invitation before he starts blasting away with big shots to the head of Froch, sending him reeling around the ring. Froch will likely try and fight back and will continue to get hit with huge arcing shots from Johnson. After five or six rounds or so, Froch’s nose will be swelled up and looking like fellow countryman Amir Khan’s nose after the Marcos Maidana fight. Froch is going to look hideous from the big shots he’s going to be eating all night long. Eventually, I see Froch getting taken out with a big shot from Johnson and left in a crumpled heap on the canvas.
