Froch says he has his “Sights set on Ward”

By Scott Gilfoid: Without even having fought his next Super Six tournament opponent Glen Johnson, newly crowned WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch (27-1, 20 KO’s) is already looking past Johnson towards a fight against World Boxing Association (WBA) super middleweight champion Andre Ward on the finals of the Super Six tournament next year.

Froch seems to be counting his chickens before they’ve hatched, because he’s got real problems ahead of him in his fight with Johnson, because this guy actually throws punches and isn’t afraid to let his hands go for 12 rounds.

In Sky Sports Ringside, Froch had this to say: “I’ve got my sights set on myself and Ward. It looks like that’s how it’s going to pan out. Once I get the Ward fight out of the way, you might see me at light heavyweight in a super fight against someone like Jean Pascal, as long as he does his job with [Bernard] Hopkins. I’m the only blemish on Pascal’s record.”

Someone needs to wake Froch up, because I think he’s dreaming. He’s kidding himself by saying “Once I get the Ward fight out of the way.” I hope Froch means after he loses to Ward. He can then move up to light heavyweight while licking his wounds and hurt pride from the loss to Ward and try his luck against whoever is the champion at that time.

I would assume that Pascal will be still holding a title by then because he’s likely to get beaten by Hopkins and/or Chad Dawson. It would still be an interesting fight between Froch and Pascal with both of them coming off of losses, but I would hardly call it a “Super fight” the way that Froch described it. I think it will be a decent fight between guys who were beaten up in their recent fights.

But Froch needs to really slow down his ambitions he’s talking about future fights that likely will never happen the way that he sees it. Johnson is going to be a big problem for Froch, because Johnson has big power, throws a lot of punches and Froch is there to be hit. This isn’t Abraham who just covered up all night long and made Froch look good in the process. This is going to be another Andre Dirrell-esque moment for Froch with him looking bad and having to likely resort to fouling when things start going bad for him against Johnson.

Froch said this about Johnson: “If I do the same plan as I did against Abraham – plan A – maybe I’ll finish him off. He’s been around a few years.“

I think that’s wishful thinking on Froch’s part. He’s currently on a knockout dry spell lately, and people are starting to question Froch’s so called power. If anyone is going to get knocked out in the Johnson fight, I see Froch as the one that gets taken out because I think Johnson is the bigger puncher of the two. And Johnson hits hard with both hands, not just with his right like Froch.
