Fillingham’s View – Andre Ward vs. Sakio Bika

By Adam Fillingham: Last Saturday former world title challenger Sakio Bika took on WBA world super middleweight champion Andre Ward. The Australian Bika gave Ward the hardest fight since he won his world strap one year ago.

I myself had the bout much closer than the judges as I thought his all action style, continuous punching and aggression won him a lot of rounds. Although I thought that, I could still see why some people would give a landslide victory to Ward. My final result was 117-115 to Ward.

Andre Ward fought the wrong fight, but fought the wrong fight well. On the inside Ward was great. His defence was tight, his hands were quick and accurate and he looked strong even through to the final round.

I did not see Ward as much of an inside fighter after his other two bouts with Mikkel Kessler and Allan Green, where he fought a lot on the outside and when he got Inside he mostly clinched.

Now for weakness’. Sakio Bika proved he just isn’t world class and I don’t think he ever will be after losing to Joe Calzaghe, Lucian Bute and now Andre Ward. He put on his A game against all three opponents and came unstuck in all.

Andre Ward proved he can be brought into a brawl after going the hard route to defeating a tough veteran fighter. Ward isn’t a brawler; he is a boxer and should stick to what he does best.

Now in conclusion, although Andre fought completely the wrong fight, it was by far the most entertaining of all his last three. The fights with Mikkel Kessler and Allan Green (especially) in my opinion where stinkers. Hopefully his next bout with Arthur Abraham will be as entertaining.
