Image: David Lemieux to fight Marco Antonio Rubio in early 2011By Jim Dower: Unbeaten middleweight contender David Lemieux (25-0, 24 KO’s) will be fighting the hard hitting Mexican contender Marco Antonio Rubio (48-5-1, 41 KO’s in early 2011 in a WBC middleweight eliminator bout. The winner of this fight will be on course to fight World Boxing Council middleweight title holder Sergio Martinez later on in the year. Rubio, 30, has a lot of experience and will be a tough test for Lemieux. Robio has beaten quality fighters like Jose Luis Zertuche, Rigberto Alvarez, Jose Miguel Berrio, Enrique Ornelas and Alfredo Cuevas.

In Rubio’s biggest fight of his career, he was taken out by WBC/WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik in a 9th round TKO loss last year in February. Pavlik had too much power for Rubio to contend with. However, Pavlik, 6’2 1/2″, is much taller than the listed 5’10 1/2″ Lemieux, and Rubio should be able to get his shots in without getting tagged on the way in like he was against Pavlik. Lemieux, although listed at 5’10”, doesn’t appear to be much more than 5’8″ and has short arms.

Rubio should be able to land his shots in this fight. Lemieux’s chin hasn’t really been tested thus far, as his opposition has been strictly weak punchers and 2nd tier opponents. Rubio, if nothing else, can punch with power. If he can stay on his feet for six rounds or more, it should answer some questions about whether Lemieux has a good chin or not. We already know that he has excellent power. But his chin needs to be tested, as does his boxing skills. His opponents have made it easy for him by coming straight at him. Eventually, Lemieux needs to be matched against a pure boxer with a chin before he gets to the level of Sergio Martinez.
