Image: Amir Khan and the blind support he gets from his fansBy Malik Khan: This is article is written by a Muslim in Britain just to note this. A lot of Amir Khan’s fans don’t really know much of the sport, and I think the main reason Khan has a huge backing in Britain is because of the large numbers of Muslims and Pakistanis in Britain. I’m not saying don’t support our brother but don’t be so biased towards someone and discredit the other fighter like Marcos Maidana. I am writing this article after reading a lot of comments on Facebook to various websites.

Many of Khan’s fans are saying that he clearly won the fight against Maidana last Saturday by a landslide. However, even thought Khan did win, it was very close. Some of Khan’s fans are saying that Maidana was humiliated. I see this as bad support for Khan, because I get the impression his fans never even followed boxing before he became popular. Khan’s fans need to realize how lucky he was that he didn’t get his career ended against Maidana. What makes it worse, is that Khan is bragging about not having been badly hurt by Maidana in their fight and saying he could have made the fight easier.

I agree he could have made the fight easier for him. Boxing isn’t just about attacking your opponent. Khan’s defense is poor, but his trainer Freddie Roach is saying it took him three years for his best fighter Manny Pacquiao to get off the ropes after he first started training him years ago. Let’s see if Khan can learn. Only time will tell. But I don’t know how Khan can say he wasn’t hurt by Maidana. Even a blind man could see that Khan was badly hurt in the 10th round.

Maidana took him to the trenches and then through hell and back. I think Khan’s head may be still affected by the damage from Maidana’s powerful shots. Anyway watching the fight last weekend knows that Khan won, but was lucky to survive and assisted with breaks in the action by referee Joe Cortez. At the end of the day, I am a fan for boxing and not a fan of a boxer. I have my favorite fighters, but I’m not a diehard supporter of any fighters. But I do think I’ve become a fan of Maidana after watching him last Saturday.
