Saul Alvarez vs. Lovemore N’dou this Saturday

By Dan Ambrose: In what will likely be an ugly mismatch, unbeaten WBC Silver light middleweight champion Saul Alvarez (34-0-1, 26 KO’s) makes his second defense of his obscure title against 39-year-old Lovemore N’dou (48-11-2, 31 KO’s) in a 12 round bout at the Estadio Beto Avila, Veracruz, Veracruz, Mexico. Alvarez may or may not pan out in the future. He’s got good power but rotten defensive skills and what appears to be a hand eye problem when it comes to picking off punches.

Alvarez doesn’t seem able to pick off shots at this point in his career. He is still young and may develop into a better fight on defense, but then again he may not. His hand speed isn’t great and he’s not going to be able to run over all of his opponents like he did recently against another 39-year-old, Carlos Baldomir last September. It may be that Alvarez is about as good as he ever will be, and promoters could be in for a huge disappointment if he fails to improve much beyond where he is now as a fighter.

Alvarez should have enough to beat N’dou. If not, then Golden Boy Promotions, his promoters, are going to have to think hard about his upside. N’dou is a fighter that’s old enough, faded enough and small enough for Alvarez to beat. However, if he can’t beat fighter like this, then GBP are going to have to extend the period for Alvarez to keep his training wheels on and continue to match him with old guys or 2nd tier fodder.
