By Sean McDaniel: Manny Pacquiao was involved in one of the most boring fights in memory in his last bout against Joshua Clottey. Although Freddie Roach and Bob Arum said over and over again how Clottey was a good choice for Pacquiao because he comes to fight, it didn’t turn out that way.

Clottey, who usually only fights in brief spurts in his fights, went into complete shutdown for the fight and merely threw jabs and mostly covered up all night. It was an awful choice of an opponent going into the fight, because Clottey had just lost his last fight to Miguel Cotto.

However, Roach said he would be a good pick, and Roach proved to be dead wrong. Now Roach is saying this: “It’ll [Pacquiao vs. Antonio Margarito] be a lot better than the Clottey fight, because everyone knows Margarito throws punches.”

I wish Roach had said that before I wasted my money on the Clottey-Pacquiao fight, because I wouldn’t have bothered buying. Let’s hope Roach sees things straight for this fight, because Margarito sure has been looking pitiful in his last two fights, and I don’t see the point in him being selected for Pacquiao unless they’re looking for another easy mark.

Margarito really needs to throw a lot of punches if we’re going to be saved from boredom. I can’t remember the last interesting Pacquiao fight. It’s been at least two years since Pacquiao was matched up against someone that had enough left in the tank to beat him, and that was Juan Manuel Marquez. Since that fight, Pacquiao has been put in against washed fighters like Oscar De La Hoya, and fighters that had recently been pounded with Miguel Cotto, Ricky Hatton and Clottey.

Margarito is more or less in the same boat as the last three, except we really don’t know if his once impressive punching power was legit or not. There’s speculation by fans that Margarito’s punching power was fueled by loaded gloves. We’ll never know for sure, but it wasn’t a good sign that he looked weaker than his last opponent Roberto Garcia.
