Image: Klitschko vs. Chisora: Dereck has the tools to winBy Dave Lahr: British heavyweight Dereck Chisora (14-0, 9 KO’s) definitely has the skills, the power and the ring smarts to pull off a huge upset of IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (55-3, 49 KO’s) on December 11th at the SAP-Arena, Mannheim, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. I don’t even see this as a case of Chisora pulling off an upset, because he has the ability to win this fight but people still don’t realize how good this guy is. I think Chisora is the best fighter in the UK by far, and that makes him a top three heavyweight in the division because WBA title holder Haye is consider number 3.

Chisora has better defense and a better chin than Haye, and puts Chisora in front of Haye in my mind. Chisora is one of the best pressure fighters I’ve seen coming out of the heavyweight division in quite some time, and Wladimir has always had problems against fighters like Chisora. While I don’t think Chisora hits as hard as former Klitschko conquerors Corrie Sanders, Lamon Brewster and Ross Puritty, he hits with power that’s in the general neighborhood as those guys.

To light up Wladimir and score a knockout, all it takes is a few well placed punches, and Wladimir will be down and Chisora will be going home the new heavyweight champion on December 11th. There’s no real changes that Chisora has to make in his style to beat the 6’6″ Klitschko. Chisora just needs to stay low, keep moving forward and looking to throwing a lot of combinations without stop at the weak chinned younger Klitschko brother.

My only advice as a knowledgeable Klitschko expert is for Chisora to redirect his punches from downstairs to upstairs aiming for Wladimir’s weak chin. Although I think Chisora will do well throwing to the body, he’s better to try and get it over with as fast as he can by throwing his bombs to the head of Klitschko.

Chisora can’t take changes with Wladimir by wasting precious time throwing shots to the body hoping to weaken Wladimir in the later rounds of the fight, because Wladimir might get in one of his left hooks and stop the show. Chisora has to be like a heat seeking missile and going straight for Wladimir’s jaw to get this fight over with, and so he can leave Germany with the belts. Chisora doesn’t want to let this fight go to decision, because I can’t see him winning a decision in Germany.
