Chisora using Richard Towers to prepare for Klitschko

By Dave Lahr: Undefeated Dereck Chisora (14-0, 9 KO’s) is using unbeaten 6’8” Richard Towers (8-0, 6 KO’s) to help him prepare for his title fight against IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (55-3, 49 KO’s) on December 11th, at the SAP-Arena, Mannheim, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, according to Bettor.com.

Towers, 31, is Chisora’s sparring partner and is a high quality fighter with athleticism comparable to Wladimir. It’s an excellent pick for Chisora, because Towers already has a fighting style that’s somewhat similar to the 34-year-old Klitschko.

Towers moves remarkably well for a big man, and should be able to copy Klitschkos’ style without any problems. Towers doesn’t have as good of a jab, left hook or right hand compared to Klitschko, but he’s close enough to give Chisora a good preparation for what’s ahead of him on December 11th.

Chisora may already be the best fighter in the UK. WBA heavyweight champion David Haye is considered to be #1 at this point, but I think Chisora would likely beat Haye because he would take his shots and keep coming forward.

I don’t think Haye could take Chisora’s power. And I think Chisora has an excellent chance of beating Wladimir if he can stay low, duck under Wladimir’s jabs and get in close to pound the Ukrainian. Wladimir is only dangerous when on the outside where he can measure his opponents for right hands and left hooks.

The trick for Chisora is to minimize the amount of time he spends on the outside, and to get in close as fast as he can to pound Wladimir. Chisora is dangerous on the inside, and I think he’ll be able to record a stoppage as long as he doesn’t act stupid and try to fight the 6’6” Wladimir form a distance.

Chisora made some mistakes in his last fight against Sam Sexton when Chisora moved around on the outside and spent time covering up on the ropes. If Chisora does that against Wladimir, he’ll get knocked out. This is why Chisora needs to fix those mistakes and focus on coming at Wladimir looking to pressure him.

Wladimir can’t take pressure and his punches are weak once his opponents get inside of his power alley. Wladimir punches hard when he gets full extension on his shots, but if you take that away from him by getting close, he’s like any other heavyweight and is very vulnerable.

Chisora has a chance to knock Wladimir out if he fights smart. I think Towers is really going to help Chisora be ready for everything and anything Wladimir brings to the table on December 11th.
