Chavez’s previously scheduled opponent welterweight Alfonso Gomez suffered a tear in a ligament in his left elbow while training. Instead of the welterweight Gomez being replaced by middleweight, since this is after all a middleweight bout, the small 5’8″ junior middleweight contender Wolak was dug up to replace Top Rank fighter Gomez.

Wolak, like Gomez, also fights for Top Rank, so this will be an in house fight. This should be a winnable bout for Chavez Jr., but you never know because he’s very beatable and hasn’t looked all that good against the most B level opponents he’s been in with. Chavez Jr. has only been in with top tier fighter and that was Top Rank fringe contender John Duddy, who is a long ways from being on the level of fighters like Sergio Martinez, Gennady Golovkin and other top fighters.

Chavez should be able to beat Wolak based on size alone. Wolak has no hand speed, is short, doesn’t have big power and his defense is poor. In other words, a perfect opponent for Chavez Jr. to look against before he’s put in with Miguel Cotto and likely destroyed next year.

The card goes for a whopping $44.95, which is incredible given that the Chavez-Wolak fight is the main event. The last time I checked, Chavez isn’t a world champion, unless you count the little known WBC Silver title that he’s in possession of. I don’t. For that kind of money, I would expect to have Top Rank fighters like Cotto, Antonio Margarito and Manny Pacquiao on the same card.

The other fights on the card are as follows:

Nonito Donaire vs. Volodymyr Sydorenko
Humberto Soto vs. Urbano Antillon
Miguel Angel Garcia vs. Olivier Lontchi
Rodrigo Garcia vs. Rodrigo Villarreal

I’m not into paying $44.95 to watch a non-champion Chavez beat up a small junior middleweight who isn’t even near the best in the division. And I’m not interested in seeing Donaire beat up Sidorenko, a fighter who has lost two out of his last three fights. The Soto-Antillon fight is a decent bout but not one that I would ever consider paying $44.95. I would pay maybe 25 cents for that one, nothing for the Chavez-Wolak, nothing for the Donaire-Sidorenko and nothing for the Garcia-Lontchi and Garcia-Villarreal bout.
