Image: Andre Ward in Pointless yet Scrappy BoutBy Mark Hepplestall: Cameroonian Sakio Bika takes on Andre Ward in a keep busy fight for the WBA Super Middleweight title. Ward decided on taking this fight after the Dirrell fight was canceled even after Showtime awarded Ward the 2 points for a points victory before throwing a punch.

In the first Bika came out throwing knowing that this is his final chance at the big time, Bika’s style is hard to grasp as he doesn’t really have a style and is very unorthodox in the way he throws punches, Ward found it very hard to see were the punches were coming from yet managed to evade the majority even though over the first 3 rounds Bika landed more shots.

Bika and Ward both complained about headbutts, which is ironic from Ward considering everybody knowing and even Antonio Tarver pointing out that Ward isn’t shy when using his head.Ward was cut in the 3rd due to a headbutt which was classed as accidental, Bika’s style or lack of style caused problems for Ward. In the 4th Ward landed some huge left hooks on Bika which repeatedly staggered him; however Bika like a true warrior keeps coming forward and keeps throwing punches making the fight competitive.

By the end of the 6th round Ward was bleeding on both eyes, the damage caused by a punch from Bika and the scores of the fight on Antonio Tarver’s unofficial scorecard was that ward was winning by 1 round, yet it could have gone either way to this point depending on what you like. Still in this round both boxers leaded with their heads and accidental headbutts were still evident.

Going into the 8th the referee kept pulling the boxer apart as they lead with their heads; it was very evident by looking at Wards face that this was a very physical fight. The 9th was all about the jab by Andre Ward as he jabbed and moved inside leading with his head and shoulders behind the jab to cause maximum damage and to nullify any attacks coming in from Bika. Andre ward got really wild in the 9th and threw an elbow shot at Bika to no effect from the referee which would have been penalized with in many other countries, maybe even states other than Oakland.

Round 10 was all headbutts with Ward and Bika hitting each other with more headbutts then actual scoring shots. In fact the 10th was awful with just jab, headbutt and clinch which caused Bika to suffer a cut over his left eye. The fight went to a bar room brawl at this point. Next the fight went from bad to worse as it just got uglier when compared to the boxing comparison of Froch Vs Abraham earlier in the evening. The referee made no attempt to stop both boxers from leading with their heads and let them both get away with dirty tactics all night long. Bika needed a KO going into the 12th while Ward was ahead on points but not looking spectacular, Bika went wild and Ward stood toe to toe, at one point the referee broke the boxers up and Ward sucker punched Bika causing the referee to call a time out for a talking to.

At the end of the fight i can actually say the better boxer won yet it was the dirtiest fight I have ever saw in my life. Styles make fights and I am dreading Ward Vs Abraham now because chances are it’s going to be more of the same. Ward won by 120 – 108 , 118 – 110, 118 – 110 which were a bit nice towards ward as the rounds were close and i had Ward winning by 4 rounds not an 8 round majority. Overall how would it compare to the Froch Vs Abraham fight, well it doesn’t compare let’s just look ahead to the next round which is Ward vs Abraham and Froch Vs Johnson. The major Talking point will be who will fight at home this time? Abraham has fought in Berlin once compared to wards 3 times in Oakland and Froch has fought in Nottingham once while Johnson has fought in Las Vegas once.
