“Speed kills” as Pacquiao captures WBC crown

By James Rafferty: Saturday 13th November will be the remembered as the day that P4P King Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao (52-3-2) won an unprecedented 8 world title in 6 different weight divisions. The Dallas cowboy’s stadium in Arlington Texas was the venue for the WBC super welterweight bout between Pacquiao and the infamous former 2 time world champion Antonio Margarito (38-7-0).

Putting the now infamous hand wrap scandal aside, Margarito was given more chance of winning this bout in the weeks leading up to the fight but unfortunately the real result was far different from the opinions of many boxing experts expected.

The opening rounds seen Pacquiao set the tempo with a stiff jab followed by the left straight, this was a continuing pattern throughout the fight. Pacquiao’s superior speed and accuracy overshadowed what was seen as a massive weight advantage in Margarito who was just short of 12 stone on fight night. The “Tijuana tornado” also possessed the favorable reach advantage but this counted for nothing as Pacquiao’s blurring hand and foot speed let him land flush left hands to the body and head along with one of Mannys less lauded weapons, the right hook.
Pacquiao destroyed the awfully sluggish Margarito in frightening fashion with a combination of speed, elusiveness and power, darting at Margarito with five and six punch combinations. I scored it 118-110 with Margarito taking 2 rounds for the uppercuts and left hooks he landed on Pacquiao while he was against the ropes in rounds 2 and 8.

Margarito’s eyes were subject to scrutiny from judge Laurence Cole in the final 3 rounds as it slowly closed up. Strangely, Pacquiao seemed to sympathize with his opponent and continuously looked to the referee to halt the bout. When asked by Cole how many fingers he had up (2) Margarito answered “Dos”. Good guess!

Margarito deserves a small degree of respect for the punishment he endured but other than that this fight was very one sided and proved again that Manny Pacquiao is a class act. Surely a May 2011 date with you know who is on the cards?
