Prediction: Pacquiao won’t fight Paul Williams unless he looks horrible against Sergio Martinez

Image: Prediction: Pacquiao won't fight Paul Williams unless he looks horrible against Sergio MartinezBy Chris Williams: There is talk of Top Rank promoter Bob Arum considering a future fight between his fighter Manny Pacquiao (51-3-2, 38 KO’s) and Paul Williams (39-1, 27 KO’s) if Pacquiao wins his next fight against Antonio Margarito on November 13th, and Williams defeats WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (45-2-2, 24 KO’s) again in their rematch on November 20th at the Boardwalk Hall, in Atlantic City, New Jersey. I don’t see it happening, though, even though Williams is looking to fight at welterweight and can fight at pretty much any weight class he wants because of his ability to lose and gain weight with ease.

Arum won’t likely let Pacquiao fight a guy like Williams, and I can see Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach not going this match-up either. Roach says he would never put one of his fighters in a bout that he doesn’t think that they could win, so I think Roach wouldn’t want Pacquiao to take the Williams fight because Roach wouldn’t be able to guarantee a win for his Filipino fighter. After all, Williams isn’t struggling and isn’t looking shot like a lot of Pacquiao’s opponents have looked in the past two years.

Either they’ve been coming off terrible beatings or they’ve look shot before Pacquiao even fought them. Williams isn’t shot and hasn’t taking any beatings. Williams is fighting well, and with his 6’1″ and 82″ reach, he would likely pound the stuffing out of Pacquiao and easily beat him. Whatever is left over of Pacquiao from his fight with Margarito, would likely be easy pickings for a fighter like Williams.

As such, you can probably forget about a fight between Pacquiao and Williams in this lifetime. Pacquiao will finish his career with a needless rematch/money fight against Miguel Cotto and maybe a one-sided loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. After that, I see Pacquiao hanging up his gloves unless Arum can drag him out to beat up the record inflated Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in a horrible mismatch. But a fight between Pacquiao and Williams, you can pretty much forget about.
