Pacquiao planning on fighting three more times and then retiring

By Chris Williams: I’m sure the loyal and loving fans of Manny Pacquiao aren’t going to like this but Pacquiao plans on fighting only three more times before putting a wrap on his long boxing career and hanging up his gloves for good.

In an article at the Agency France Press, Pacquiao said “I am thinking about retirement but I can still fight a few fights and that is it.” One can only guess who those three fighters will be, but it’s very likely that two of them will be fellow Top Rank fighters Miguel Cotto and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

I’m no fan of either of those guys, and can’t see Pacquiao losing them unless he badly fades in the next fight or ends up taking a career altering beating from Antonio Margarito next month on November 13th. That is certainly a possibility, because Pacquiao’s recent opponents have already had the fight beaten or starved out of them before even entering the ring with him.

That may be the case with Margarito as well, because he hasn’t looked the same since taking a battering against Shane Mosley last year. However, Margarito could surprise some fans by finding a bit of his old magic and wiping the deck with the little Pacquiao.

Margarito has always done well against smaller fighters that come right at him the way that Pacquiao likely will all night. Forget about the in and out attacking style of Pacquiao, he’s going to be too heavy and lethargic to do anything but stand directly in front of Margarito trying to trade shots.

I can see Pacquiao fighting exactly the same way he did against Joshua Clottey last March. In that fight, Clottey, at one time a good puncher, suddenly stopped throwing punches completely and let Pacquiao stand in front of him and throw punch after punch all nigh long without retaliating.

It make things easy for Pacquiao because I don’t think he had the legs to do his jumping around like he used to. If Pacquiao fights the same way against Margarito, he’s going to be making it really easy on him to land his power shots and to have a stationary target for his high volume punching.

The only way that Mosley was able to beat Margarito was by using the punch and grab technique. Mosley would throw one or two punches and immediately grab Margarito to keep him from getting off. It worked because he was able to beat him.
