Matthew Hatton interested in facing Saul Alvarez in early 2011, if Matthew can’t get title shot

By Sean McDaniel: European Boxing Union (EBU) welterweight champion Matthew Hatton (40-4-2, 15 KO’s) says he might be interested in facing unbeaten welterweight contender Saul Alvarez (34-0-1, 26 KO’s) in early 2011 if Hatton can’t get a title shot against WBA welterweight champion Vyacheslav Senchenko. Hatton, 29, had been hoping to get a title shot against Senchenko recently but was ignored by him. Hatton instead will be defending his EBU title against unbeaten Roberto Belge (25-0-1, 4 KO’s) next month on November 26th at the Reebok Stadium, Bolton, Lancashire.

In an article at the Manchester Evening News, Hatton said “I’m definitely interested in that fight [against Saul Alvarez]. I didn’t accept it this time because it meant flying out to Mexico and I was giving away a lot with the weight as well…He’s massive in Mexico, but Golden Boy have been in touch since and if he comes through his next fight then it is definitely one I’m interested in. If I can’t get a world title shot and if it can be made in America, then I’d look for Alvarez in early next year.”

Alvarez should win his next fight on December 4th, because he’s facing 39-year-old Lovemore N’dou and that’s a fight that the bigger, younger and stronger Alvarez will win without too much trouble. Hatton could get a title shot against Senchneko. I can see that happening because Senchenko’s best chance of retaining his WBA title is against the #6 ranked WBA contender Hatton rather than taking on the arguably much more dangerous Mike Jones.

Hatton defeated Yuriy Nuzhnenko by a 12 round decision in his last fight in July. Hatton looked very impressive in that fight. It was one of Hatton’s better fights and he’s to have made a lot of strides since being beaten Craig Watson two years ago in 2008.

Hatton would likely have a lot of problems against Alvarez due to the Mexican’s fighters huge power. However, Alvarez is far from invincible, as he looked terrible at times against Carlos Baldomir in his last fight in September. But his power would make him very tough and dangerous for a fighter like Hatton.
