Margarito’s trainer says “He [Pacquiao] backs up easy”

By Dave Lahr: Robert Garcia, the trainer for Antonio Margarito (38-6, 27 KO’s), sees a lot of flaws in Manny Pacquiao (51-3-2, 38 KO’s) when watching video of him and he likes Margarito’s chances of beating him the more he sees of the Filipino fighter.

In an article by Doug Fisher at Ringtv.com, Garcia says “He (Pacquiao) seems unbeatable. But if you really study him – somebody that really knows boxing – you see a lot of mistakes. I think Tony is going to do what lately nobody’s been able to do. The last one to do it was Erik Morales — he beat Pacquiao when he did it — and that’s not show him any respect. He can be backed up. He backs up easy.”

Yes, Garcia is absolutely correct. Pacquiao makes a lot of mistakes and backs up easily when pressured. He also stops punching and waits for his opponents to stop punching before he throws anything.

This is something that has remained unchanged through all the years that Pacquiao has been trained by Freddie Roach. You would think that with all the good things that are said about Roach being a great trainer and all, he would have fixed these flaws in Pacquiao by now or at least noticed them. But Pacquiao is just as flawed in this area now as he was way back in the first fight with Juan Manuel Marquez in 2004.

Garcia is going to take advantage of Pacquiao’s tendency to give ground easily by having Margarito going after Pacquiao and putting a lot of pressure on him in the same way that Erik Morales did in their first fight before Morales began to have weight problems.

Morales backed Pacquiao up constantly and threw tons of punches one after another and didn’t give Pacquiao many breaks to start landing his own shots. What happened then is that Pacquiao quickly fell behind in the fight and was cut and ended up losing the fight by a 12 round decision.

Margarito will do the same thing to Pacquiao that Morales did, only better because of his bigger power, size and higher punch output. I think Margarito’s pressure is going to break Pacquiao and have him looking confused and needing help from Roach.

I don’t see anything that Roach will be able to do to assist Pacquiao, because it will be him that’s messing things by not being able to deal with Margarito’s pressure.
