Image: Kell Brook vs. Mike Jones in early 2011 for WBO welterweight title?By Scott Gilfoid: Unbeaten American welterweight contender Mike Jones (22-0, 18 KO’s) could be facing undefeated British welterweight champion Kell Brook (22-0, 15 KO’s) in early 2011 for the interim World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight title, according to Dan Rafael. It’s a strong possibility that this fight happens as long as the 27-year-old Jones defeats Jesus Soto Karass on the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao vs. Antonio Margarito bout on November 13th at the Cowboys Stadium, in Arlington, Texas. If Jones wins that fight, which is highly likely given his huge size and power advantage over the weaker Karass, then the Brook-Jones fight is a strong possibility for 2011.

Brook still has a fight coming up on December 11th against a still to be determined opponent. He’ll need to win that fight to make the Jones fight happen. Brook recently defeated former British welterweight champion Michael Jennings by a 5th round stoppage on September 18th on the Magnificent Seven card in Birmingham. It was by far the biggest win of Brook’s career. However, to go from that fight into a bout against the huge punching Jones will be a huge leap up in opposition for Brook.

There’s also the size difference between them. Jones is a huge 6′ foot welterweight with a long reach and crushing power, whereas Brook is a lot smaller at only 5’9″, and doesn’t look nearly as powerful in comparison. In looking at the two fighters, it almost seems like they belong in difference weight classes because Brook appears to be so much smaller than Jones. Although Brook would appear to have the better boxing skills compared to Jones, he might in the end be too small for Jones and end up getting crushed by the big American welterweight.

Brook hasn’t been in with any huge punchers anywhere near the same class as Jones and this could be a wipe-out for him. Brook seems to have a really small frame and he might be better off trimming some baby fat from his frame and moving down in weight to the light welterweight where he might find the pickings a lot easier. I think Jones will knock Brook out if and when they fight next year, and hopefully Brook get a clue after the loss and move down in weight. If he sticks around after Jones takes him apart, I can see Brook getting destroyed by the likes of Saul Alvarez in the future. In other words, I don’t see Brook as having the size to win or hold down any of the welterweight titles. He’s much too small in my estimation. He’d be better served to move down a division or two.
