Is there a case for John Murray to face Juan Diaz?

By Shaun Campbell: European lightweight champion John Murray (30-0 18ko’s) is looking for a new opponent and a step up to world level. Although Murray is probably not quite ready for the likes of Juan Manuel Marquez, Michael Katsidis or Robert Guerrero, it is clear he deserves a chance to fight at the top level. Murray is the type of fighter that needs good opponents to bring out the best of his, and it is widely thought that we still haven’t seen the best out of him. Many believe him to be a one dimensional, come forward brawler with no head movement. This view is usually adopted by those who have seen one, or maybe two of his fights. Ricky Hatton was also cursed with the same sort of view.

John Murray is probably a physically stronger lightweight than Juan Manuel Marquez, but as is the case in boxing, size doesn’t always matter. Murray is probably best suited for the light-welterweight division, and it is only a matter of time until he moves up. But in the meantime, he needs a big name on his record to finally gain the credit he deserves. One name Murray has mentioned is former champion Juan Diaz. This is a much smarter fight, and a good choice of opponent for the Manchester man. As seen against Nate Campbell, Paulie Malignaggi and Juan Manuel Marquez, Diaz can be beaten and out-boxed. However, questions still remain about Murray’s boxing skills. Some claim he doesn’t consider his own defence, and is happy to adopt the attitude of “take a punch, land a punch”. Amir Khan has told Murray that he can’t do that at world level. But can John Murray outbox opponent? I personally believe he can.

Juan Diaz on the other hand has lost 3 of his last 4 fights. Outclassed by Marquez, and out-boxed and surprisingly hurt against light punching Paulie Malignaggi. Does Diaz have anything left to lose? Does he have the ambition to keep fighting? No official retirement announcement has been given, but no one could blame him if he didn’t want to box again, as he does have interests outside of boxing. Having said that, if he wants one last shot to end his career on a win, or just kick start his career, John Murray could be a decent option for him. A man who hasn’t fought at world level before could be a clever option for former world champion Diaz.

Whoever is the favourite, and whatever the outcome, there is no doubt that this fight would be electric. Both enjoy a tear up, and they wouldn’t even need a ring as they could fight in a phone booth. None stop punching, but I believe Murray’s natural strength and toughness would see him add an impressive name to his record, and gain him slight recognition in America. Diaz however is no pushover, and there is a chance that he could outwork Murray and take a decision. This fight would be competitive as neither man is top world class, but both fighting to reach that level and this fight could springboard either man to the top. My pick would be John Murray to stop Juan Diaz, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Diaz pulled off a victory.
