Image: Green-Johnson: Allan has to use his power to take Glen outBy Sean McDaniel: 31-year-old super middleweight contender Allan Green (29-2, 20 KO’s) is 10 years younger than 41-year-old light heavyweight Glen Johnson (50-14-2, 34 KO’s) in their November 6th Super Six tournament fight at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada. The age might as well be pointless, because Johnson, in his prime years, was a much better fighter than Green is now. Johnson has lost a little bit of his power and speed in the past five years, but he still has a great chin and a high work rate going for him. He may not need power to beat the likes of Green in their fight on the undercard of the Juan Manuel Lopez vs. Rafael Marquez bout.

Johnson’s high work rate could be more than what Green can take. We saw Green get badly outworked in his last fight against Andre Ward in June of this year. Green looked weight drained and complained of having taken off too much weight in struggling to make the 168 pound weight limit for the super middleweight division. However, seeing Green’s other fights, he’s not someone that ever throws a lot of punches. Instead, Green likes to land one shot at a time and he often gets his opponents in trouble from his single power shots.

He then likes to flurry on them to score the knockout. If he’s to beat Johnson, Green is going to have to load up on his shots big time and hope he can hurt him enough to where Green can flurry on him to get the stoppage. It’s not likely to happen, because Johnson has a good chin and he’s used to being hit by bigger fighters than Green and still remain on his feet. Green might not have the power needed to get Johnson in trouble, even if he loads up on every shot he throws.

In this case, Green is going to have to up his work rate two or three times if he’s to have a chance at beating Johnson. I’ve never seen a fight of Green’s where he’s thrown a lot of punches. I don’t think he’s capable of doing that even if he wanted to and wasn’t weight drained from having taken off a lot of weight to make the 168 pound limit. Johnson can probably take Green’s power but I’m still not sure about that because Green wasn’t at his best in his last fight against Ward. I would suggest that Green load up as much as possible in the first six rounds, and if he’s unable to get the knockout during that time, then he needs to try and get a decision if he hasn’t run out of gas by then.
