Image: Wladimir Klitschko to fight Derek Chisora on December 11thBy Eric Thomas: According to the latest news reports, British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion Derek Chisora (14-0, 9 KO’s) has agreed to fight International Boxing Federation/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir klitschko (55-3, 49 KO’s) on December 11th. We’re still waiting the official word from Klitschko and Chisora’s promoters, but if this indeed true, this will be an interesting fight for British fans. But it’s not going to be a fight that will thrill boxing fans outside of the UK, because the 26-year-old Chisora has very limited experience against top level heavyweights and is undersized at only 6’1″ compared to the 6’6″ Klitschko. Chisora is like a weak punching version of Lamon Brewster.

On paper, this is a huge mismatch, because Chisora appears to be a step down from Klitschko’s recent opponent Samuel Peter. It’s fair to say that Chisora doesn’t punch as hard as Peter, and his chin probably isn’t as good as Peter’s as well. Chisora was briefly hurt by the light hitting Sam Sexton in his last fight on August 18th on the Magnificent Seven card. Chisora won the fight by a 9th round stoppage but was far from dominating in that fight. Chisora upped his work rate in the 8th and 9th rounds, and took Sexton out with a flurry of shots while in close.

That kind of fighting will be virtually impossible against Klitschko, because he won’t let his opponents fight in close and he hits much harder than Chisora. Klitschko revealed a new weapon, an uppercut, in his last fight with Peter and showed good power with it. He may find it useful against Chisora if he tries to crowd him like he did Sexton.

Outside of WBA heavyweight champion David Haye, Chisora is probably the second best heavyweight in the UK. Audley Harrison, depending on if he could land one of his big shots, would likely have a lot of problems with Chisora’s work rate and wide shots. Chisora likes to throw a massive of punches, and he’s been getting away with it thus far because his opponents haven’t had any power. In his win over an old Danny Williams, Chisora jumped on him immediately and took him out in two rounds. Chisora basically crowded Williams and didn’t let him get any extension on his shots. He’ll likely try the same tactic with Wladimir.
