Will Khan be rushed into a fight with Mayweather Jr. next year?

By William Mackay: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer is eager to make WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (23-1, 17 KO’s) their next pay per view star. The idea he had was for Khan to take on and beat World Boxing Association light welterweight interim champion Marcos Maidana (29-1, 27 KO’s) in December, and then fight and beat the winner of the light welterweight clash between champions Timothy Bradley and Devon Alexander.

At that point, Khan would be well on his way to being a major worldwide star if he could unify the light welterweight titles. Schaefer would then match Khan up with Floyd Mayweather Jr. in a mega fight, which would bring in good numbers but obviously not the same kinds of numbers that a Pacquiao vs. Mayweather mega fight would bring in.

However, Schaefer is now talking as if he wants to speed up the pace of matching Khan up with Mayweather, saying in an article at the Dailymail.co.uk “If we can’t make Mayweather-Pacquiao in the spring it may be too late. So this gives us time to build Amir into a pay-per-view superstar in the US.”

This looks like Schaefer will skip having Khan fight the winner of the Bradley-Alexander bout and will just throw him in with Mayweather and see what kinds of PPV numbers he can bring in. It kind of makes sense, because Khan will likely get beaten by the winner of the Bradley vs. Alexander fight, which I assume will be Bradley.

I don’t see Khan as being in the same league as Bradley, and unless he can win a controversial decision, I think Khan would get badly beaten by Bradley. That would then ruin any hope of matching Khan up with Mayweather, because Khan would then, depending on how badly Bradley beats him, would have to slowly rebuild his career fight by fight.

However, I think Khan is going to get beaten even before he gets to the stage where Schaefer has to choose whether to put him in with Mayweather or have him fight the Bradley-Alexander winner. I see Khan being knocked out by Marcos Maidana in December, and that will pretty much remove Khan from the table for a bout against Mayweather. However, it might not. Manny Pacquiao has been taking on fighters that have recently been knocked out in their last fight or recently knocked out, so if Pacquiao can do it and get away with it, then I don’t see why Mayweather couldn’t as well with a fight against Khan if he gets knocked cold by Maidana in December.

Golden Boy could put Khan in with an easy stiff with zero power, like the last five opponents that Khan has faces since being knocked out in 2008, and after Khan destroys the stiff, he could be matched up with Maweather for a mega fight. If they have the bout take place in the UK, it will do well regardless of how badly Khan is beaten by Maidana.
