Image: Schaefer sends offer to Khan for Maidana boutBy William Mackay: If WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (23-1, 17 KO’s) is truly afraid of World Boxing Association light welterweight interim champion Marcos Maidana (29-1, 27 KO’s) he’ll turn down the offer just sent to him from Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer for a fight against the Argentinian slugger Maidana for a fight in December. According to James Slater of eastsideboxing.com, Schaefer has sent an offer to the 23-year-old Khan for a fight against Maidana, which if Khan agrees to it, will be taking place on December 11th in either Las Vegas, Nevada or Detroit, Michigan.

Khan has a big decision to make, because he’s been matched against pretty much pillow punchers since being stopped in the 1st round two years ago in 2008 by Breidis Prescott. And while Khan is now being trained by Freddie Roach and has shown signs of improvement recently, the fact remains he’s still been matched against fighters that are lacking in the power department.

Maidana, 27, may not have the boxing skills of some of the fighters that Khan has beaten recently, like Andriy Kotelnik and Paulie Malignaggi, but Maidana makes up for it by his ability to bang hard. One reason why Khan may choose to fight Maidana now, after all this time, is that Maidana looked very average in his last fight against DeMarcus Corley last week.

Maidana won the fight by a 12 round decision but looked tired in the later rounds and was easy to hit throughout the fight. But Maidana did land some big shots on Corley and was able to knock him down in the fight and had him hurt on a couple of other occasions.

It’s debatable whether Khan would have been able to survive from the shots that Maidana landed against Corley. And that’s the whole thing. Khan may be able to make Maidana look bad for a while with his superior hand speed and movement, but sooner or later Maidana is going to test Khan’s fragile chin and if he’s not up to taking the kind of power shots that Maidana is throwing, then we may be seeing Khan knocked out again.

You can rest assured that Maidana will be looking to take Khan’s head off with every punch. He’s going to be applying a lot of pressure on Khan from the very start of the fight. Khan is going to have to use his legs much more than he’s been having to do against the light punchers that he’s been matched against in the past couple of years. For this reason, Khan may elect to not take the fight and continue to fight guys like Dmitriy Salita and Paulie Malignaggi and build his record up with more fluff wins.
