Image: Ricky Burns to fight Matt Zegan on December 4th or December 11th?By Scott Gilfoid: It’s being reported by Fightnews.com that World Boxing Organization (WBO) super featherweight champion Ricky Burns (29-2, 7 KO’s) will be defending his title on December 4th or December 11th against lightweight contender Matt Zegan (42-5-2, 21 KO’s) rather than against someone from the super featherweight division. I figured that Burns would be taking on a soft opponent, but at least expected someone from his own division. Zegan, 34, is ranked #3 by the WBO, but the dude is coming off of a six round draw against Boris Berg in September, and also fought to another six round draw in February of this year against Jonny Ibramov.

How in the heck is Zegan being selected for Burns with all those draws? And I’m not even talking how Zegan was beaten last year by Krzsztof Cieslak by a 10 round decision or his other four losses between 2003 and 2007. Why is this dude being picked? Is it because he’s got a whole mess of losses and he’s not a threat to Burns? I’m not impressed. Burns needs to step it up several notches. I don’t even have Zegan ranked in the top 15 in lightweight division.

Forget about his inflated ranking by the WBO, I see the Zegan guy as 2nd tier all the way. Man, Burns should be fighting guys like Jorge Linares, Roberto Guerrero, Takashi Uchiyama, Rene Gonzalez, Juan Carlos Salgado, Jorge Solis, Vincente Escobedo, Malcolm Klassen or Vitali Tajberto, Why isn’t Burns fighting them, eh? Is it because they would dangerous for him and might beat him? I’m really disappointed in Burns.

I see Burns-Zegan as one of those pad your record type fights for Burns.
