Image: Mosley-Mora: Shane thinks he can fight until he’s 46By Jason Kim: Shane Mosley (46-6, 39 KO’s) thinks he can fight another seven more years. He just turned 39 on September 7th, and judging by how horrible he looked in his last fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. last May, I think Mosley will be pushing it if he fights beyond this year. Mosley will be moving up in weight on September 18th to fight former World Boxing Council junior middleweight champion Sergio Mora (22-1-1, 6 KO’s) at the Staples Center, in Los Angeles, California.

I think Mosley will be incredibly fortunate if he can win this fight. However, he has big plans for his future and wants to fight Manny Pacquiao if the Filipino star can get by his next opponent Antonio Margarito on November 13th.
In an article at the Lasvegassun, Mosley says “It’s evident that I can go until I’m 45, 46, 47, if I want to. It just depends on how I feel. I’ll know when it’s time to hang up the gloves. Right now is definitely not the time.”

I think it’s evident that Mosley isn’t looking good and may lose to Mora. Forget about Pacquiao, I think there’s a good chance that Mosley gets dominated by Mora on 9/18. I think Mosley could win the fight by controversial means because Mora isn’t a popular fighter and anytime you have a much popular guy like Mosley facing a lesser star, you can wind up with funny decisions. There’s nothing evident about Mosley fighting beyond this year.

It will depend on how he looks against Mora. If Mosley looks as shot as he did in his one-sided 12 round decision against Mayweather last May, then he probably needs to hang up his gloves. Mosley can always fight until 46 like Evander Holyfield, but that doesn’t mean he should. And it doesn’t mean it would be the smart thing to do. If Mosley wants to keep fighting and keep losing, then that’s on him. I personally think he’s crazy if he keeps fighting if Mora beats him.

Mosley’s decision to fight the bigger Mora is already a bizarre move on Mosley’s part. Instead of staying at welterweight, which is the perfect weight class for the 5’9” Mosley, he’s decided to move up to the junior middleweight division where he’s had mixed success in the past, losing repeatedly to Winky Wright.

Mora can really help out his career in a big way if he can beat Mosley. It doesn’t matter if Mosley looks shot again, Mora will still get a lot of credit if he can beat Mosley. A win over Shane will likely lead to Mora getting fights against guys like Pacquiao, Alfredo Angulo, Sergio Martinez, Paul Williams or Miguel Cotto. He’s going to get at least one good paying bout. And if he wins that fight, Mora can get even bigger paydays. He’s got to take the Mosley fight serious though. If he doesn’t beat him then he can forget about all the other fights he’d like to have.
