Morales-Limond: Is Willie good enough to end Erik’s comeback?

By Peter Wells: Mexican fighters have high expectations of themselves and most can’t get rid of that hunger to succeed. They may already be legends but fighting can never stop for them. Erik Morales (49-6, 34 KO’s) believes he can come back and still be a world champion. But after 3 years out the ring and only 1 fight since then against an easy Jose Alfaro, it’s more likely he’s got worse since retiring. If that is the case then it isn’t good news more Morales. He ended his career with 4 straight defeats against Zahir Raheem, Manny Pacquiao twice and David Diaz. Both the Pacquiao fights ended early. His other two defeats were both to Marco Antonio Barrera both on points.

Willie Limond (33-2, 8 KO’s) though is a few classes below those fighters but Morales is no where near what he was back then. So Limond may be in for the chance of his career but experience is something he lacks. He’s had 20 less fights than his opponent and is only 3 years younger. His quality of opposition is much lower to, his last fight was nearly 10 months ago in an 8 rounder which went the full distance. His defeats have come against Alex Arthur and the 12 fight version of Amir Khan.

On paper you can’t see Limond winning this one but with Morales’ decline and the extra motivation that he will never get this opportunity again he could pull off an upset.

As much as the facts are against it I’m going to go for Limond to pull out the best fight of his career and come through some tough patches to take a close but deserved decision.
