It’s Mosley’s fault for wanting to fight Mora

Image: It's Mosley's fault for wanting to fight MoraBy Dan Ambrose: Shane Mosley didn’t have to fight Sergio Mora. That was something that Mosley obviously wanted, because he’s the one that decided to move up to the junior middleweight division and fight Mora of all the potential choices that Mosley had to pick from. Mora isn’t even a champion. The guy is only ranked #8 by the WBC. Mosley could have selected guys like Alfredo Angulo, Kermit Cintron or Vanes Martirosyan instead.

But he wanted the elusive Mora for some odd reason. What he got was a fight that few people enjoyed and one that ended in a controversial 12 round draw. While there are some that feel that Mosley should have won the fight, those same fans/writers would be hard pressed to say that Mosley looked good in the fight. If they say that was only because of the movement and holding by Mora, then I think they need to take a closer look at Mosley and also look at his fight prior to that against Floyd Mayweather Jr. Mosley has lost something. He’s not the same fighter that beat Antonio Margarito 1 ½ years ago. He’s slowed down, and he doesn’t throw as many punches as he did then.

At 39, Mosley is starting to show his age in a big way. And so for boxing fans that think that Mosley won the fight against Mora, they’re kidding themselves if they think Mosley still has his skills intact. He doesn’t and that will be proven out once he takes on his next opponent, unless he picks a low quality fighter to fight next. But it was Mosley’s blunder to choose Mora to fight. I hate to say it, but I couldn’t pick a worst opponent if I tried to. I can’t believe that Mosley was crazy enough to fight Mora, and I also can’t believe that Golden Boy Promotions went along with it. Couldn’t they see how difficult Mora, with his punch and grab style, would be for Mosley?

He got exactly what he was asking for by choosing Mora to fight instead of someone that just stands in one place and tries to slug it out. Those are the types of fighters that Mosley has always done well against, not the type that move a lot and clinch. Mosley has never done well against those types of fighters. But he didn’t just do poor against Mora because of his difficult style that he presented. A big reason for Mosley’s poor performance is his age. The guy has lost a big part of his game with his speed, accuracy, stamina and punch output deteriorating.

I don’t how you can say that he won the fight by at all, much less by any kind of lopsided scores. I heard one writer say that he saw Mosley winning pretty much every round of the fight. That’s really sad, because all this does is keep Mosley in the game longer by making him – and boxing fans – think the guy still has it when it’s clear he doesn’t anymore. If they put him in with a good fighter like Miguel Cotto, Manny Pacquiao, or Andre Berto, I can see Mosley just getting destroyed. But at this point, I think even lower ranked fighters will beat him. I think he’s lost enough to the point where just top 10 guys can beat him. We just saw Mora give him all kinds of problems, and Mora isn’t a champion. What does that tell you?
