Image: Garcia thinks Margarito has too much power and heart for PacquiaoBy Chris Williams: While a lot of boxing fans believe that Manny Pacquiao has selected a fighter that he can beat in 32-year-old previously down on his luck Antonio Margarito, his trainer Robert Garcia believes that Margarito will beat Pacquiao on November 13th at the Cowboys Stadium, in Arlington, Texas. In an article by Chris Robinson at Examiner.com, Garcia says “I’ve been watching him [Pacquiao] over and over and Erik Morales beat him, Marquez almost beat him/ I could have gone the other way. He is beatable. I think we are going to come up with a great game plan and Margarito has the strength, the power, the heart to beat him. I have no doubt that we are going to pull it out.”

We’ll see, won’t we? Pacquiao’s opponents have been well selected since his questionable life and death decision over Juan Manuel Marquez in 2008. Pacquiao’s opponents have either been coming off of recent losses or had to struggle against a catch weight that was part of the fight contract. Margarito, like some of the other fighters that Pacquiao has been taking on recently, was beaten recently and he, too, will have to fight Pacquiao at a weight draining 151 pound catch weight.

If Margarito does pull off the victory, it will be going against natural wisdom for the fight. He’s slower, older, and hasn’t been as active as Pacquiao. He also seems to be missing his once excellent power since he was caught with loaded hand wraps before his bout with Shane Mosley in 2009. For Margarito to beat the Filipino, his power is going to have to return somehow. Whether that means he grows his hair out like Samson or eats his Spinach like Popeye, he’s going to have to get his power back if he wants to beat Pacquiao. I don’t think he’s going to be finding that power anytime soon. This is why I see this fight as perfect match-making for Pacquiao’s team.

You pick a guy whose power has abandoned him, and who is at a point in his career where he’s struggling, and then you sign him up for a fight at a catch weight. I don’t know how Pacquiao can lose unless he somehow gets manhandled by Margarito. I think Margarito can still punch well to the body and he’s probably still dangerous with his uppercuts. Pacquiao is going to have to take a certain amount of punishment to get the win. If he breaks down like he was against Joshua Clottey in his last fight, Margarito will have a good chance of beating him.

Pacquiao looked like utter hell from the 10 or so shots that Clottey was landing in every round. That’s a horribly low amount of connects, yet it showed how it doesn’t take much to beat up the smaller Pacquiao. If Margarito can land say 40 shots per round, I think he can drain Pacquiao to the point where he can get a stoppage win. If Margarito can cut Manny, then it gets much easier after that. Pacquiao is much easier to manage when he’s cut. He tends to do a lot of clinching and would be a sitting duck for Margarito’s uppercuts at that point.
