Image: Amir Khan vs. Maidana finally signedBy Joe Mitchell: WBA light welterweight world champion Amir Khan has finally signed to fight his interim counterpart Marcos Maidana after long draw out process that has taken a year to finally sort out. He confirmed this on his twitter page today and the issue of money is now over. It is the fight everyone wanted to see Khan in, and will no doubt be the biggest challenge of his career with Maidana being one of the sport’s biggest punchers and being a quality opponent as well, unlike Breidis Prescott who blitzed Khan is one round.

I am glad Khan has taken this fight because it shows he is not a duck and has the chance to gain a lot of fans if he comes out winning this. I think it is a make or break fight for Khan, because if Khan loses this everyone will say he will always get stopped by someone who can punch, and you can understand that with him being knock down a lot so far in his career and recently not fighting anyone who can punch of note. But I think Khan has matured physically and mentally over the last 2 years working with Roach and maybe can take a better punch than people think. I do not think Golden Boy or Freddie Roach would put Khan in this fight if they didn’t believe he could win and in style. I also believe Khan has probably sparred a lot better fights than Maidana at the Wild Card gym who can punch.

I expect this to be Khans defining fight of his career and if he gets past this fight I think P4P domination should be on the radar, with Bradley and Alexander fighting each other, Khan can fight the winner to find out the No1 light welterweight. If then Khan comes out on top I wouldn’t be surprised if we see Khan maybe in with P4P King Floyd Mayweather who has always wanted to fight in Wembley Stadium and fighting Khan would be a huge fight. It is realistic because Khan is Golden Boy, so the fight will be easy to make and Floyd may think Khan has been knocked out so will be a good choice opponent for him.

Finally December 11th is 1 of the 2 biggest fights in the division with Bradley and Alexander rumoured to be fighting in January 2011. Surely the winners of both fights could fight on HBO PPV with a strong undercard in the summer and the winner of that going to fight Pacquiao or Mayweather, we can all dream and as a Brit I hope it will be Khan in those huge mega fights
