Will Berto fight Aydin or another light welterweight?

Image: Will Berto fight Aydin or another light welterweight?By Jason Kim: At this point I would be more than pleased to see WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto (26-0, 20 KO’s) fight welterweight contender Selcuk Aydin (20-0, 15 KO’s). It’s not that I see Aydin as a great fighter, but at least he’s a welterweight and can punch. Berto has been a big disappointment as the World Boxing Council champion.

Since winning the WBC title two years ago against Miguel Angel Rodriguez, Berto has fought light welterweights Steve Forbes and Juan Urango, and struggled with the feather fisted Luis Collazo. In his last fight, Berto beat Carlos Quintana, another non-puncher.

And now there’s talk of Berto fighting another light welterweight in Andriy Kotelnik. I don’t know why Berto is even bothering holding down the WBC welterweight title, because he seems he needs to move down in weight so he can fight light welterweights. I doubt he’ll do that, though.

Berto is going to stay at welterweight because of fighters like Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. Berto wants to fight them but it doesn’t look like either of them is in a hurry to fight Berto. Since those guys aren’t likely to be fighting Berto, it would at least be nice if he would take on another welterweight.

I think Aydin is a decent choice. I think he’s a better choice than going after light welterweight Kotelnik, who lost his last fight to Devon Alexander. I don’t care that the fight was close. The fact of the matter is that Kotelnik lost that fight and he’s a light welterweight, not a welterweight. It’s not interesting to see Berto face smaller guys over and over again.

Kotelnik can’t punch and because of that he won’t have the physical tools to beat Berto. If the idea is for Berto to just beat some guy and look good for the fans, then I guess Kotelnik is the one to fight because he’ll small and weak enough for Berto win. However, I’m hoping Berto is matched against someone from his own weight class that can potentially make it interesting while it lasts.

I think Aydin is that guy. He may not have the best of boxing skills, but his power will give Berto problems for a while. I see Berto as the 4th or 5th best welterweight right now. I think Saul Alvarez, Shane Mosley, Pacquiao, Mike Jones and Mayweather are all better than Berto. I think Berto isn’t being helped by being matched against smaller fighters. That’s just going to make it that much harder for Berto when he finally does get put in with a good welterweight at some point in the future.
