Why doesn’t Khan get it over with and fight Maidana already?

Image: Why doesn't Khan get it over with and fight Maidana already?By Scott Gilfoid: Since last year boxing fans have been waiting for WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan to face WBA light welterweight interim champion Marcos Maidana and for an entire year now we’ve seen Khan fighting everybody but Maidana.

Thus far, Khan has defended his WBA title twice against Dmitri Salita and Paulie Malignaggi. Khan is now looking to try and defend his World Boxing Association title against lightweight Juan Manuel Marquez in December rather than take on Maidana.

We’ve heard Khan say that he thinks he can beat Maidana and we’ve heard Khan say he’d be next. But it’s not happening for some reason and I think the WBA needs to step up and start looking to strip Khan of his title. If he’s not going to face Maidana, then what’s the point of him having the title? Malignaggi wasn’t Khan’s mandatory challenger and Khan fought him.

Now he wants to fight a non-light welterweight in Marquez rather than Maidana. Why is the WBA allowing this? They need to start stripping him of the title rather than letting him whoever he wants. Maidana has been waiting an entire year now looking to get a title shot against Khan, but it looks like Maidana is going to have to wait another year before he gets a chance.

In the meantime, Khan’s trainer, Freddie Roach, is saying that he thinks Khan can beat Maidana and the other top light welterweights in the division Timothy Bradley and Devon Alexander. Is Khan looking to fight them? Nope.

As far as I can tell, Khan has gotten close to fighting none of them. He wants to fight a lightweight, and who knows after that. I hope he doesn’t fight another lightweight like Michael Katsidis, although I would be more than pleased if Khan chose him right about now.

That would be a big improvement over Malignaggi and Salita, believe me. But I don’t understand is what Khan and Roach are waiting for. Is he just stalling, hoping someone will come along and beat Maidana for him so he doesn’t have to worry about him anymore?

We already saw how Khan waited too long to fight a rematch with Breidis Prescott and then a couple of other fighters came along and beat Prescott for him. Now Khan has no interest at all in fighting Prescott. I see the same thing happening with Maidana if he’s forced to wait too much longer.
